Snowmobiling season is here, and Warren County has unveiled a new snowmobiling computer and cellphone application that will provide local snowmobilers with maps of snowmobile trails around the county accessible on an interactive platform.
The new application, a joint project of Warren County Department of Planning and Community Development and Warren County Department of Parks, Recreation & Railroad, provides a countywide map of snowmobile trails maintained from Queensbury to Hague and all points in between.
The “Snowmobiling in Warren County, NY” app allows users to download maps to their smartphones, which can then be accessed on the phones even when riders are out of cell service coverage. It also uses global positioning satellite (GPS) data to plot users’ location on the trails in real time.
The application includes notable locations along the trail, such as scenic vistas, eateries and fueling stops. Trail systems maintained by South Warren Snowmobile Club, North Warren Traiblazers, Hague Snogoers and Thurman Connection are included in the application. In all, the clubs’ trails traverse all but two towns in Warren County.
“Warren County has miles and miles of beautiful snowmobile trails that are maintained by dedicated members of four snowmobile clubs, and this new application will allow riders to explore our communities along the trails, find new places to ride and enjoy our trails safely,” said Dean Moore, Warren County Director of Parks, Recreation and Railroad.
Amanda Beck from Warren County Planning’s Geographic Information Systems, an avid snowmobiler who maintains snowmobile trail data for Warren County, decided to create the application as a way for the public to access trail information.
Beck explained: “We work closely with snowmobile clubs around the county to maintain the data included in the app, and this will help them track their location, and what is around them, whether or not they have cellphone service. We are thankful for their help in producing this application and are excited to see it get use this winter.”
Snowmobilers can find the application in the Apple and Google Play stores. They will need to first download the ArcGIS Field Maps application, and search “Snowmobiling in Warren County, NY” in that app to find and download the Warren County maps.
