Warren County urges residents to avoid storm-damaged roads, prepare for extended power outages

Tuesday’s severe thunderstorms have left a major cleanup ahead in Warren County, and National Grid has advised Warren County Office of Emergency Services that many customers who have lost electricity will see their outages last numerous days. Nearly 16,000 remained out in Warren County as of Wednesday morning.

National Grid has additional crews headed to the region as of Wednesday morning, and is arranging a distribution of dry ice and water in the region, but date and time have not been finalized.

Warren County Department of Public Works crews, municipal crews and private crews around the region have been working since late Tuesday afternoon to deal with storm damage, and ask that motorists and residents be patient as they deal with snapped, twisted and uprooted trees, damaged roads and buildings. Much of the damage cannot be addressed until downed wires are de-energized by National Grid.

“We have a lot of damage around Warren County, and many roads are impassable or have trees across parts of them. We ask that residents avoid areas with storm damage if possible, and stay away from downed lines. Utility lines may not look like they are live when they are energized, so please do not approach them,” said Kevin Geraghty, Warren County Board of Supervisors Chairman and longtime Warrensburg firefighter.

Warren County Department of Public Works is reporting closures of the following Warren County-maintained roads of 8 a.m. Wednesday:

  • Schroon River Road in Warrensburg, from Pucker Street to County Route 11
  • Federal Hill Road, Bolton
  • Valley Woods Road, Bolton
  • Horicon Avenue, north of the golf course in Bolton
  • East River Drive, Lake Luzerne
  • County Route 11 in Bolton, passable in one lane but should be avoided.

Please note this list includes county-maintained roads only. In addition, there are numerous town, Glens Falls and state-maintained roads where traffic is limited or impossible, including NYS Route 28, which remains closed in Johnsburg.

Warren County Bikeway should be avoided Wednesday, as there are multiple trees and branches down on several sections of the trail.

Residents should be aware of the possibility of additional thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon. More updates will be sent as the situation develops.
