Local leaders to discuss human trafficking issues in region Aug. 8

Hoping to build on a discussion earlier this year that opened eyes around the region to the local human trafficking problem, area leaders will hold a second event in Glens Falls on August 8th focusing on how to address human trafficking in the region.

The coalition that has put together the event, a public-private partnership known as Lower Adirondack Alliance for Freedom, is working to inform local residents about the fact that human trafficking is a local problem, and that it impacts all ages and genders.

In January 2024, a panel discussion held at The Park Theater in Glens Falls drew over 200 people to learn about the local human trafficking issue, which includes the exploitation of vulnerable populations via forced labor, drug sales, pornography, sex, or other activities.

Since that event, Lower Adirondack Alliance for Freedom has continued to grow to combat human trafficking by raising awareness, advocating for victims' rights, and providing comprehensive support services to survivors.

Through collaboration with local communities, businesses, government agencies, and international organizations, Alliance members are committed to prevent trafficking and empower survivors to rebuild their lives with dignity and freedom.

"Protecting our youth from trafficking requires more than laws; it demands the active engagement of every community member. Each of us has a role to play in safeguarding the future of our young generation,” explained Jason McLaughlin, Director of WAIT House, an advocacy organization for youth in Glens Falls.

“Raising awareness that human trafficking is occurring in our community is the first step in eradicating this pervasive issue. It will take a collective effort to ensure that every person is free from exploitation. Together we can make a lasting impact and support survivors in reclaiming their lives,” said Marc Yrsha, Chief Banking Officer, Arrow Financial, which is a supporter of the event.

The panel discussion will feature local experts and will be held at The Queensbury Hotel’s Adirondack Ballroom, 88 Ridge Street, Glens Falls, on Thursday, August 8th starting, at 10 a.m.

Liza Ochsendorf, Warren County Director of Workforce Development, will again moderate the discussion, and engage the following panelists: Jason Carusone, Warren County District Attorney; Jim LaFarr, Warren County Sheriff; Sherry McGloin, Executive Director for Warren-Washington CARE Center; Lisa DeWeese, Supervisors of Survivor Support Services at Planned Parenthood; and Nadia Giumarra, Forensic Nurse Coordinator at Glens Falls Hospital.

The event is open to the public free of charge and is sponsored by Storedtech. Registration is required with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce at this link.

Media are welcome to attend and panelists will be available after the event for questions.
