Cooling centers to open for June heat wave

Warren County is reminding residents that cooling centers will be available this week as dangerously high heat is forecast to impact our region for at least three days, beginning Tuesday.

In addition to heat indices that will approach 100 degrees Tuesday through Thursday, residents should be prepared for potential power outages because of electrical demand, as well as poor air quality.

Said Warren County Administrator John Taflan: “Anyone exposed to the heat is at risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can cause death. Symptoms of heat stroke include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, confusion, nausea, weakness, and fainting. People without effective cooling are at high risk, especially heat-sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, or those with a chronic illness. People should strongly consider canceling outdoor activities, remain hydrated, stay in a cool place (including overnight), and check on your neighbors. Use air conditioning if you have it, or find a location such as a cooling center with air conditioning.”

Warren County Office of Emergency Services and Warren County Health Services have worked with community partners to create a network of air conditioned "cooling centers" in Warren County where residents can go to escape the heat.

Eight will be available in Warren County this week, including Aviation Mall, Crandall Public Library, Caldwell-Lake George Library, Bolton Central School, Richards Library in Warrensburg, Lake Luzerne Senior Center, Bolton Free Library and The Open Door Mission in Glens Falls have agreed to open their doors to those hoping to cool off.

(Please note that some library and school locations will be closed Wednesday, June 19th in observance of the state and federal holiday for Juneteenth.)

If you have not done so already, download Warren County’s emergency mobile device application, Ready Warren County NY in the Apple and Android app stores, which will have updated information during the weather event.

In addition, this NY State website can help you locate more information about addresses and hours for cooling resources.
