Historical Background The Federal government enacted a legislation that mandated a national decennial census starting in 1790 as a means of establishing and creating districts for representation in Congress. Warren County was established in 1813. The first Federal census of Warren County dates to 1820, earlier census records for present day Warren county towns may be found in the Washington County, NY census records for 1790, 1800 and 1810. All census records are sealed for 72 years. The most recent Federal census available is the 1930 census which was made public in 2002. New York State started their own decennial census in 1815 as a means of providing a more accurate population count in the ten years between the Federal census. NYS censuses were taken in 1825, 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915 and 1925. The 1825, 1835 and 1845 census records of Warren County no longer exist.
