| Historical Background |
These papers deal mainly with the Glens Falls Feeder Dam and Canal
and Section 2 of the Champlain Canal. The primary purpose of the
Glens Falls Feeder Canal was to provide extra water during dry
summer months to the Champlain Canal. The canal was also used to
transport lumber, lime, bricks and produce from the Glens Falls
area to Lake Champlain and cities along the Hudson River from
Albany south to New York City. These papers document claims arising
from the building of the feeder dam in 1831 and the enlargement of
the feeder canal and dam in 1843-1845. Most claims are for flooding
above the feeder dam and for such things as new bridge abutments
when the canal was widened. The expenditures cover wages and the
cost of materials for canal repairs and operations. The bonds are
performance bonds in connection with work on the canal.
