BUSINESS RESOURCES
There are many resources to assist you in your business endeavors, and the suggestions below when combined are a powerful toolset.
Computer
A computer can help you design, plan, track finances, and do many other activities that would take much longer manually. Even a simple word processing program will enable you to write letters and generate quick mailings, make your own advertising fliers and much more. With training, you can use a computer to manage the business finances and even set up a website as another way to reach customers.
Internet
The Internet literally opens up a whole new world of information and connections. You can easily research competitors, bargin shop for inventory, and expand your customer base. If you don't have a computer, many local libraries (e.g., Horicon, Crandall, etc.) in Warren County now provide free internet access, as well as wireless "WiFi" if you have a laptop or even a phone that can take advantage of the technology.
Software
There is software to run on a computer for just about any need! Some programs, called "shareware", are free to download and use while others must be purchased (e.g., Microsoft Office). The Internet can be a great altertive to buying programs, and many online applications are easier to use than paid programs as well. For example, Google Documents enables you to create spreadsheets, forms, documents and presentations.
Digital Camera
"A picture says a thousand words" - a photograph can often make a positive impact faster and more effectively than written documents. Images taken with a digital camera can be included in brochures, fliers, emails, and websites.
Maps
Many people underestimate the utility and power of maps, but visualizing information is a great way of communicating what your business does and how you can market yourself. There are many free mapping resources available on the Internet providing valuable data ranging from demographics (US Census Bureau American Factfinder) to 3D flyovers of the entire globe (Google Earth, Virtual Earth). In addition, the GIS Program in Warren County, housed within the Planning Department, provides mapping and analysis services.
